The vision
Paolo Soleri's prototype 'arcology' — architecture + ecology — a hyperdense, car-free vertical town for 5,000 people that would occupy a tiny footprint in the high desert.
Context
Funded largely by sales of Soleri's hand-cast bronze windbells, Arcosanti was built by rotating cohorts of architecture students as a living laboratory for compact urbanism.
What happened
Construction is roughly 5% complete. The site houses around 50–80 people. After Soleri's 2017 posthumous reckoning over abuse allegations, the foundation pivoted toward education rather than completion.
Why it fell short
- Funding model (windbells + workshops) couldn't fund a city
- Hand-built concrete construction was prohibitively slow
- Remote location 110 km from Phoenix limited economic base
- Founder-dependent vision didn't survive Soleri's death and scandal
